The Munkkiniemen Cadet School, situated on the outskirts of Helsinki, is an Art Nouveau “castle,” the most famous landmark in the neighbourhood of Munkkiniemi. It was built in 1919 as a cadet boarding house, with plans drawn by architect Eliel Saarinen, a pioneer in bold Finnish architecture and the father of equally famous architect and designer Eero Saarinen.

With the 100th anniversary of the building, AALTO Development is marking the beginning of a new era by completely renovating the iconic property, adding 39 apartments. With the exception of protected heritage spaces, the interior of the building is being reimagined by another noted Finnish architect, Polo Sarpaneva.

Because of the heritage floorplan, each apartment is unique. Designs include everything from a 24-square-metre studio to a 271-square-metre luxury apartment, with many points in-between, all with Italian kitchens and fixtures, and an abundance of luxury-amenity highlights—a gym, spa, club room and wine cellar included. Wide views open up from large windows facing the sea or a series of themed gardens. Tech-savviness includes a garage equipped with electric charging stations, a distinct nod to the sustainable future.

Many of design-forward elements and ideas permeating the Munkkiniemen “Kadetti” are carried through to other AALTO Development projects, including Lākhouse.  AALTO Development continues to thrive by embracing an international scope and by championing a strong commitment to heritage, forward-thinking design, community and sustainability.
